Over 23,000 euros were raised to support Captain Spyros following the stunning rescue of dozens of people in Kythera.
The support campaign for the captain of Kythera, Spyros Kasimatis, who found himself on the front line of the major fire on July 26th, has caused emotion and a wave of solidarity.
With his vessel, the Glass Bottom, he managed to rescue dozens of trapped people from Limnionas. The overloading caused serious damage to the vessel, with an estimated cost of 75,000 euros, resulting in it being temporarily taken out of service.
In a post on July 30th, the captain himself informed that routes would be carried out with the company’s smaller vessel, expressing his regret for the forced suspension of the Glass Bottom.
A few days ago, an online support campaign was created through the GoGetFunding platform, which as of today Monday, has already raised more than 23,000 euros from over 300 donors, towards a total goal of 75,000 euros. To support the campaign click here:
In those tragic moments, Aimilios Cheilakis had spoken publicly, stating that he, his wife Athina Maximos, and 138 other people were saved thanks to the intervention of a local islander who had a vessel.
“There was a man who took on the obligation to save us. His vessel suffered tens of thousands of euros in damage and there is no one to compensate him. The state has no plan, and that is the problem. We must learn to prevent, not to cure,” he had characteristically said.
The case of Captain Spyros is not just a story of individual bravery, but also a loud reminder of the need for an organized civil protection plan. Until then, society proves that it knows how to stand by those who put the “we” above the “I”.
