Developer OX2 has submitted a permit application to construct an offshore windfarm in the Swedish exclusive economic zone between the islands of Gotland and Öland
The 5.5-GW Aurora is one of the largest proposed anywhere in the world and, if approved, will be built approximately 20 km from the island of Gotland and 30 km from the Island of Öland.
The windfarm will use up to 370 wind turbines, with a maximum height of 370 m. OX2 previously applied for a Natura 2000 permit for the windfarm.
Electricity production from the windfarm will be in the order of 24 TWh per year, which corresponds to the electricity consumption of about 5M households or about 17% of Sweden’s total electricity consumption.
OX2 country manager Sweden, Hillevi Priscar said, “This is the next step to realise the Aurora offshore windfarm.
“Together with our other planned offshore windfarms it constitutes a significant part of the electricity production Sweden needs to reach climate targets and secure energy independence.”
The project is in an early development stage and part of OX2 Sweden’s project development portfolio, which by the end of Q1 2022 amounted to 11.7 GW.
