Panama Canal Authority opens concessionaire process for natural gas pipeline project

Must read

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has launched the concessionaire selection process for a new energy pipeline project, beginning with a market engagement event in Panama City that gathered more than 45 representatives from global energy companies.

The project involves a 76-kilometer pipeline with a planned transfer capacity of up to 2.5 million barrels per day, supported by maritime terminals on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

According to ACP, the infrastructure is intended to establish a new interoceanic energy corridor, designed to transport propane, butane, and ethane between the Gulf of Mexico and Northeast Asia.

The authority stated that the corridor will free up canal capacity without additional water usage, reduce vessel wait times, and strengthen the canal’s long-term competitiveness. ACP emphasized that the initiative will follow international standards of safety, environmental protection, and operational practices.

During this stage, it is seeking feedback from potential concessionaires on the proposed structure, roles, and concession model, with individual meetings planned with interested parties.

Companies that attended the initial event included CB Fenton & Co, ENEOS, Energy Transfer, ExxonMobil, Fortress, Gyxis Corporation, Itochu Corporation, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Mitsubishi, Movement Industries, Nippon Koei, Otamerica, Phillips 66, Promigas, Puma Energy, Regent Energy Group, Shell, SK Energy, Sumitomo Corporation, SMBC (Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp), Targa Resources, Ultranav, and Vitol.

Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is an autonomous entity of the Republic of Panama, established under Panamanian law, responsible for the management, operation, maintenance, and modernization of the Panama Canal.
