As P&O Ferries plans to restart operations on the English Channel, the TUC calls for a boycott of P&O as well as its parent company, DP World, following last month’s mass sackings of almost 800 employees.
The much-criticized ferry operator, P&O, will resume sailings on the route across the English Channel between Dover and Calais this Wednesday, although passengers will only be able to board the ferries next week.
According to various British news outlets, ferries will start transporting freight between the two ports this week, but passengers will have to wait another week or so before they can travel with P&O Ferries on the popular route.
Sailings were suspended on March 17 in the wake of the mass sackings of almost 800 P&O employees, a step that has caused controversy in the UK and unleashed a torrent of criticism against the company.
Meanwhile, The Trades Union Congress (TUC), a federation of 48 trade unions, has called for a popular and commercial boycott of P&O Ferries. The TUC also demands that the UK government sever ties with P&O’s parent company, DP World.
“P&O and DP World must not be allowed to get away with their scandalous and unlawful treatment of staff,” TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said, according to The Independent.
