Western Cape police seized illicit drugs, including tik and cocaine, with a street value of more than R19 million when they stopped and searched a truck on the N1 near the Huguenot tunnel.
Saps spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said drugs had been seized after police in Paarl followed up on intelligence-driven information about a truck that was allegedly transporting drugs from Johannesburg to Cape Town.
“The truck was spotted near the Huguenot Tunnel by members of the Paarl Highway Patrol, Boland K9 and Provincial Traffic. The members stopped and searched the truck and seized 55.8kg of tik with a street value of R16 367 814 and 30.5 kg of cocaine with a street value of R3 863 435,” Masondo said.
He added that the police had stopped and searched the truck at around 7pm on Tuesday.
“A 44-year-old Nigerian national was arrested on drug-related charges and will appear before the Paarl Magistrate’s Court,” Masondo said.
Western Cape Saps Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, applauded all role players who assisted police with the operation.
