The Bilbao Port Authority has appointed Iván Jiménez as its new President, succeeding Ricardo Barkala, as part of a strategic effort to modernise the port.

Iván Jiménez Aira officially assumed the presidency of the Bilbao Port Authority on 17 July, following his appointment approved by the Basque Government on 24 June and published in official gazettes.

According to the port, Jiménez brings over 20 years of international experience in data-driven strategy, innovation, and partnerships.

He aims to strengthen the Port of Bilbao as a strategic hub for global logistics and trade, supporting the Basque economy and industry competitiveness.

With expertise in negotiation, institutional relations, and big data, Jiménez plans to modernise the port through innovation and digitalisation, focusing on strategic data management to enhance operational efficiency, sustainability, and decision-making.

Recently, the Bilbao Port Authority and the University of the Basque Country renewed their collaboration agreement to continue biomonitoring activities within the Port of Bilbao. The renewed contract, valued at approximately €785,810 ($912,883), will run for four years and expands monitoring efforts to include phytoplankton communities for the first time.
