The first months of 2025 proved particularly productive for the port of Hamburg, despite any economic and geopolitical tremors. This fact is due to the intense activity of the container terminals, as, according to port data for the first half of the year, container handling recorded an increase of 9.3% compared to the same period in 2024.
In total, so far in 2025, 4.2 million containers were handled by the port, which serves as a key logistics hub between Asia and the Baltic. In particular, container flows between Hamburg and China were increased by 10.5% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year, with total handling of 1.2 million TEUs. On the Baltic and surrounding areas side, container handling to and from Denmark increased by 36% this year and was set at 98,000 TEUs.
Furthermore, more port calls were recorded this year, primarily from larger-sized containerships. Specifically, during the period in question, port calls by vessels with a carrying capacity of over 10,000 TEUs saw an increase of 51.6%, with a total of 285 containerships. In fact, for vessels with a carrying capacity of over 24,000 TEUs, an increase of the order of 29.6% was recorded. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the port’s interconnection with land transport systems evolved smoothly in 2025, making Hamburg a nodal point for Europe’s food supply transports.
