The operational performance of the Port of Iquique once again showed outstanding figures in October, a month in which 315,646 tons were moved, recording a 59% increase compared to the 198,599 tons in the same period in 2024.
During the month, 38 vessels were served (11 more than in 2024), exports rose 65%, imports 98%, containerized and breakbulk or project cargo 56%.
With this result, the cumulative cargo transfer between January and October reached 2,878,060 tons, a figure that represented a growth of 32% compared to the 2,180,025 tons recorded in the same period of the previous year.
The general manager of Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI), Rubén Castro, valued the trend shown by the port during the year. “If no unforeseen events or force majeure situations occur, everything indicates that the Port of Iquique will far exceed 3 million tons transferred in 2025. Similarly, we project to exceed the more than 350 thousand TEU recorded last year, which reflects the dynamism of the activity,” he noted.
The executive also emphasized the regional context that drives part of this performance. “We are closely watching the new economic cycle that Bolivia, our main client and a key actor for the regional economy, will begin. This is compounded by the impact of the recently approved law that opens maritime cabotage to foreign vessels, which will strengthen the internal movement of cargo and generate new opportunities for the logistics industry,” he emphasized.
Castro also highlighted the contribution of the Molo Terminal, which has reinforced the operation. “In recent months we have received special cargo for mining projects, lithium batteries (BESS) destined for solar plants, and factory ships, activities that have allowed us to expand job opportunities and strengthen the entire logistics chain,” he added.
Container movement recorded an advance of 65%, reaching 19,057 units, while TEU traffic rose 71%, totaling 36,439, compared to 21,364 in October 2024.
Bolivian cargo also maintained an outstanding performance, with a 28% increase in the month and a cumulative growth of 19%, consolidating the role of the altiplano country as a strategic partner of the port and the region.
