Must read

Port of KThe Port of Koper, Slovenia, has completed the extension of the southern part of Pier 1, increasing the terminal’s capacity by 15% to 1.5m teu.

Construction began in mid 2020, with operational permits obtained separately for each section, resulting in the 98.5m long quayside being put into service alongside two recently installed super post-Panamax cranes.

It is one of the largest investments by the port in decades, with the value having reached €45.6 (US$???).

With each new section being put into service as storage areas, the port has been able to considerably ease the pressure on storage areas it has faces due to increased cargo volumes.

Boštjan Napast, president of the management board of Luka Koper, said: “This is not the last chapter of the expansion of the container terminal. We are currently preparing documentation for the extension of the pier also on the north side.

“This investment will be much larger in terms of assets involved and funds invested.

The total value of the investment is €248m (US$260m) until the end of 2030.

Beside ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and 340 m of quay, the northern extension includes 118,000 sq m of storage areas.

With all these investment and other process improvements, the Port of Koper’s annual capacity should reach almost 2m teu.
