Port of Pecém to undergo R$1.2 billion expansion

Must read

The latest expansion project of the Port of Pecém — Ceará’s main transport infrastructure asset — is currently undergoing a bidding process. Funded by the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex Development Company (CIPP S/A), which includes the Port of Rotterdam Authority as a 30% shareholder, the project is estimated to cost R$1.2 billion. This column spoke with a well-informed source about the project, who summarized its significance as follows:

“The Port of Pecém, which is already a very modern terminal with low operating costs, is set to take a qualitative leap. By 2028, when the expansion is expected to be completed, it will feature a dedicated berth — berth number five — for grain handling, to be operated by Transnordestina Logística. Additionally, a new berth — number 11 — will be built in the TMUT (General Cargo Multipurpose Terminal) area, which will be extended 350 meters westward.”

Pier number two, located between pier one and the TMUT, will also be extended westward. There, CIPP S/A will install equipment for loading ammonia, which will be produced by the industrial units set to manufacture green hydrogen at the future H2V Hub in Pecém.

“Those of us who operate at the Port of Pecém and witness the constant flow of Brazilian and foreign businesspeople, as well as Ceará government officials, have no doubt that the green hydrogen hub will become a reality — mainly due to logistical factors: Pecém is only a week’s voyage from European ports, has the depth to receive large ships, and with the new expansion, will also gain more modern equipment for loading and unloading all types of cargo,” the source commented.

The partnership between CIPP S/A and the Port of Rotterdam Authority has given the Port of Pecém what could be called an “upgrade” — like moving from economy class to business class. The directors appointed by the Dutch not only bring management expertise to Pecém, but also support the company’s technical decisions.

“The relationship between CIPP S/A’s team in Ceará and their Dutch partners has always been excellent,” said the source, adding that the Dutch played an active role in developing the new expansion project for the Port of Pecém.
