The Port of Rotterdam Authority has launched Carbonbid, a new sustainability initiative aimed at supporting companies in the port area to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
With a total fund of €3.5 million, the program encourages businesses ranging from port-based firms to start-ups and equipment manufacturers to submit proposals for emission-reduction projects. The initiative targets emissions not covered by the European Emissions Trading System, focusing on areas currently underserved by regulation. Funding will be awarded based on cost-effectiveness, with priority given to projects that deliver the most emission reductions per euro.
Carbonbid is part of the port’s broader strategy to become climate neutral and future proof. Projects eligible for support must aim to cut emissions by at least 100 tons, be implemented in the port area by 2030, and not have started yet.
Companies can apply for up to €700,000, and applications must be submitted by 18 July. At least five projects will receive funding.
According to Port Authority Commercial Director Matthijs van Doorn, Carbonbid is a pilot effort to test whether targeted financial incentives can accelerate sustainability efforts. It complements ongoing measures like rent discounts for companies investing in emission reductions. Contracts with selected participants will be finalized in January 2026.
