Port of Santos keeps channel at 15 meters after dredging planning deeper expansion

The Santos Port Authority (APS) completed dredging works at the Port last month. The project lasted around two months and involved the removal of sediments and maintenance of the expected depth in the navigation channel, stretching from the Alemoa area to the Barra, at Ponta da Praia. The service also included berth areas.

Following the dredging, APS carried out a bathymetric survey, which confirmed the depths — the navigation channel, for instance, remains at approximately 15 meters, allowing access for large vessels.

Thanks to the dredging, the Port of Santos continues to maintain operational draft and navigational safety. The port complex is situated in an estuary that receives a substantial volume of sediments, which can result in silting, APS noted.

Check below the charts of Brazilian container exports and imports at the Port of Santos starting from January 2022. The charts were prepared using DataLiner data and include only long-haul movements, excluding cabotage, transshipment, and other external operations.

The measures are aimed not only at current needs but also at the long-term future of the Santos waterfront, said the Port Authority’s president, Anderson Pomini. “Maintaining the current draft is essential, but we are already moving forward with deepening the channel, something that hasn’t been done in over ten years, addressing a market demand for greater depth in the Santos navigation channel.”

The works began with the removal of rocks in the estuary: “We are opening the way to reach 16 and then 17 meters of depth, which will ensure the Port is ready to receive the largest ships in the world,” Pomini said.
