Port of Tallinn in Estonia and renewables developer Sunly are to co-operate on the construction, operation and maintenance of offshore windfarms
Sunly is developing offshore wind projects west of Saaremaa and north of Hiiumaa island in Estonian waters and aims to develop offshore windfarms in Latvia and Lithuania.
Port of Tallinn recently decided to invest up to €53.0M (US$53.7M) in a new, 310-m quay with a 10-hectare area beyond the quay in Paldiski South Harbour. The quay and hinterland area will be completed mid-2025.
Sunly board member Erkki Kallas said, “Ports play an important role in the installation and maintenance of offshore windfarms, so we are happy to have the opportunity to produce concrete gravity foundations for wind turbines at Paldiski and use the port for installation work.”
Port of Tallinn chief executive Valdo Kalm said constructing the new quay will create the preconditions for Port of Tallinn to become an important partner in the construction and maintenance of offshore windfarms in the Baltic.
“The new quay will mean the port can receive high-draft, special-purpose vessels for the construction of offshore windfarms and the transport of wind turbine components,” he said.
The area beyond the new quay will allow for the manufacture and storage of components for offshore wind turbines before they are loaded onto installation vessels.
