Porto Sudeste receives Federal Government Sustainability Seal at COP30

Must read

Porto Sudeste, the private port terminal located in the city of Itaguaí, received the Sustainability Seal from the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) this Wednesday (12) during COP30 in Belém. The initiative recognizes companies in the transport sector that promote sustainable practices and maintain consistent transparency and social inclusion policies. The port terminal received the Diamond Seal, the highest MPor category, which was presented by members of the National Confederation of Transport (CNT).

The certification is granted to companies participating in the Sustainability Pact, an MPor program aimed at encouraging the adoption of good socio-environmental responsibility and governance practices in the port, airport and waterway sectors. The program is aligned with the UN’s 2030 Agenda and with Brazil’s commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The ceremony was attended by Ulisses Oliveira, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director of Porto Sudeste, and Bernardo Castello, Environmental Manager of Porto Sudeste. Both were present at the “MPOR Sustainability Award” ceremony at the Development Stake within the Green Zone, an initiative of the Transport System (CNT, SEST SENAT and ITL) aimed at promoting the exchange of knowledge among sector representatives.

“Being present at COP and receiving an unprecedented recognition from the Federal Government reinforces Porto Sudeste’s commitment to a serious and transparent environmental agenda. This recognition places us among the most sustainable and responsible companies in the transport sector in Brazil, and being part of this movement, alongside other companies that are rethinking the role of the sector in the transition to a low-carbon economy, is a source of pride and responsibility for us,” highlighted Ulisses Oliveira.

The recognition reinforces Porto Sudeste’s track record in sustainability. The terminal has already received the Pró-Clima Seal 2024, in the Diamond category, the highest level of the Brazilian Alliance for Port Decarbonization (ABDP). The certification recognizes companies that ensure transparency in carbon emissions, have clear decarbonization targets and demonstrate proven reduction results. In addition, the company has its greenhouse gas emissions inventoried and verified by the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, an action that reinforces the company’s transparency by providing qualified public data to society through the Public Emissions Register.

“Receiving the Sustainability Seal granted by MPor during a global event such as COP30 is recognition that fills us with pride and reinforces that we are on the right path. The seal is an important initiative by the Federal Government, which will inspire similar actions in other ministries and generate several positive impacts in the private sector,” said Bernardo.

2024 Sustainability Report: toward Zero Landfill and 100% clean energy
In addition to the recognition at COP30, Porto Sudeste launched its Sustainability Report, which consolidates the company’s environmental and social results for 2024. Among the main advances is a 99.1% recycling rate for solid and operational waste, bringing the terminal closer to the “Zero Landfill” goal. This objective represents one of the biggest commitments of modern environmental management: the complete elimination of sending waste to landfills.

In practice, this means that almost all material that would be discarded is actually reused and reintroduced into the production chain, either through recycling or composting.

The document also highlights that 100% of sanitary effluents generated are treated and reused internally, enabling 86% recirculation of the water used in operations. On the climate front, Porto Sudeste achieved total neutralization of Scope 2 emissions through the acquisition of Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs), ensuring consumption of 100% clean energy.

According to Ulisses Oliveira, “sustainability is present in every decision of Porto Sudeste. Our commitment is to continue advancing in practices that make the terminal increasingly efficient, innovative and connected to the transformations of the world.”
