Prysmian Group has secured preliminary approval for the construction permits it needs for its new cable plant in Brayton Point, Massachusetts
The company has also confirmed construction is due to start mid-2023 and take two years.
With a US$200M investment, plus the purchase of the land, the group plans to redevelop the site of a decommissioned coal-fired power plant into a production hub at the heart of the US offshore wind industry.
The new plant will be dedicated to the production of inter-array and export cables to connect offshore windfarms to the mainland power grid.
The factory is designed to deliver 270 km of AC 275-kV 3-core cables a year and for a possible future upgrade, if required. DC cable solutions of up to 525 kV will also be available for windfarms that are far from shore.
The Brayton Point cable hub will have an R&D centre with a high-voltage test lab, which will be the first of its kind in the US.
