Renault Group Joins Sail for Change to Boost UECC’s Green Shipping Efforts

Must read

Renault Group becomes the fifth major automaker to join UECC’s bioLNG fuel-switching initiative, targeting deep cuts in Scope 3 CO₂ emissions through sustainable maritime logistics.

Oslo, Norway | September 15, 2025 – In a decisive move to enhance sustainability in its supply chain, the Renault Group has joined United European Car Carriers’ (UECC) flagship decarbonization program, Sail for Change (S4C)—a groundbreaking fuel-switching initiative leveraging liquefied biomethane (LBM) to slash maritime emissions.

With Renault’s entry, the Sail for Change program now counts five global automotive manufacturers among its participants, further strengthening UECC’s commitment to providing low-emission RoRo transportation across Europe.

Renault officially began pilot shipments under the Sail for Change program on July 1, 2025, transporting vehicles from Zeebrugge, Belgium to Esbjerg, Denmark using vessels fueled with LBM—also known as bioLNG.

According to UECC, this switch will help Renault achieve an annual reduction of 1,000 tonnes (1 million kg) of Scope 3 CO₂ emissions, marking a significant step toward its ambitious net-zero targets.

“It is great to see that another valued customer has decided to come onboard Sail for Change,” said Glenn Edvardsen, CEO of UECC. “With growing support from our partners, we are scaling bunkering of liquefied biomethane to drive real environmental impact and meet the rising demand for sustainable shipping.”

Sail for Change is UECC’s leading initiative to offer carbon-neutral maritime transport, deploying dual- and multi-fuel LNG Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs). These next-generation vessels burned over 107,000 tonnes less CO₂ in 2024, with projections to increase that figure by 50% to nearly 155,000 tonnes in 2025.

UECC sources bioLNG through a dedicated supply agreement with Titan Clean Fuels, a partnership that is enabling large-scale reductions in carbon intensity while complying with EU and IMO decarbonization frameworks.

“Sail for Change allows our customers to make a direct, certified impact on their logistics emissions,” said Daniel Gent, UECC’s Energy & Sustainability Manager. “It’s not just about the fuel; it’s about holistic decarbonization—integrating energy efficiency onboard and investing in onshore electrification.”

Renault Group’s participation in S4C aligns with its ‘Renaulution’ strategy, which aims for a 27% reduction in logistics-related emissions by 2030, en route to achieving net zero in Europe by 2040, and globally by 2050.

By adopting marine transport powered by sustainable fuels, Renault takes a concrete step toward cleaning up its Scope 3 emissions—often the most difficult to control in a company’s carbon footprint.

UECC isn’t stopping at bioLNG. The company plans to expand the Sail for Change fuel portfolio to include eLNG and other next-gen sustainable marine fuels. This proactive approach supports UECC’s target of reducing carbon intensity by 45% by 2030, on the path to full net zero by 2040.

Moreover, UECC’s strategic investment in low-carbon shipping is already shielding its customers from rising compliance costs under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime regulations.

“We are hitting a sweet spot in the market,” said CEO Glenn Edvardsen.

“Regulatory pressure is now a commercial driver for sustainability—and Sail for Change proves that green operations can also be a competitive advantage.”

With more than half of UECC’s fuel use projected to be from alternative sources by 2030, the company is positioned to maintain CII-compliant fleet ratings and generate surplus credits under FuelEU Maritime. These credits are monetizable through pooling, enabling UECC to pass financial and environmental benefits directly to its customers.

United European Car Carriers (UECC) is a market leader in sustainable short-sea RoRo transport, operating a modern fleet of Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs) across a comprehensive pan-European network. Headquartered in Oslo, Norway, UECC provides integrated supply chain solutions and manages several major vehicle terminals throughout Europe.

UECC continues to push the boundaries of sustainable maritime logistics through innovation, investment, and industry-leading partnerships with automotive giants committed to a greener future.
