The crew of the Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas spotted an improvised raft in the Caribbean Sea, according to Cruise Mapper, which was carrying approximately 12 people adrift, off the coast of Mexico. Upon sighting the raft, a rescue boat (tender) was launched to reach those on board. Once the boat reached the raft, the people were transferred to a safe location on the cruise ship, where they were provided with water, food, and other immediate assistance.
The incident occurred during a trip from Tampa, Florida, to Costa Maya, Mexico, which was diverted from its scheduled route to avoid Hurricane Humberto and Tropical Storm Imelda.
Reports from passengers who witnessed the event indicate that the raft appeared unstable and was beginning to break apart. Apparently, the stranded people used lights to signal danger as the evening light faded.
While RCI has not released full details about their condition or identity, a spokesperson acknowledged to Cruise Mapper that standard protocols had been observed, including working with local authorities for appropriate handover once the ship approached the port.
