S/S Svendborgsund sent for scrapping

Must read

The veteran ship S/S Svendborgsund, which for more than 10 years has been lying on the slipway at Det Gamle Værft in Ærøskøbing, is now being sent for scrapping. This is announced by the shipyard in a post on Facebook.

In 2011, Udviklingsfonden Værftet took over the ship, which was built by the Dutch in Haarlem in 1907, and which subsequently sailed with passengers and cargo in the South Funen Archipelago for Sydfyenske Dampskibsselskab for 11 years. After that, it was sold to Norway.

In 1951, the ship was converted into a motor cargo vessel and sailed with cargo on varying routes for different owners under several names. From 1995, it was laid up for a large part of the time, until in 2003 it was registered as a private pleasure craft.

In 2011, it was sent for scrapping, but was instead taken over by Udviklingsfonden Værftet with the expectation that the ship would be restored and that this would reintroduce the craft of steel riveting in Denmark.

In 2014, it was placed on the slipway in Ærøskøbing and after an extensive preliminary project, attempts were made to realize the project financed through funds, but without positive feedback.

Udviklingsfonden Værftet is now closing due to a lack of funding. Det Gamle Værft is therefore being cleared during the autumn, which includes the removal of S/S Svendborgsund from the slipway and sending it for scrapping.
