Class society ABS and shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have started a joint development project to improve hull safety using smart ship technology
They will develop and test structural health monitoring (SHM) using a hull sensor package, providing information for targeted hull surveys.
SHI’s hull-stress monitoring system (HSMS) will be used for the project, in accordance with the ABS Guide Smart Functions for Marine Vessels and Offshore Units.
The partners plan to install an HSMS on a newbuild container ship scheduled for delivery in 2024.
HSMS software will be integrated into SHI’s proprietary SVessel smart platform, designed for the transition from analogue-based conventional ship systems into a digital-based lifecycle vessel-management approach.
Upon successful completion of the joint project, SHI will receive a product design assessment for a Smart SHM Tier 3 notation from ABS.
“Together with SHI, we are committed to advancing safety and efficiency with the application of smart software and digital techniques,” said ABS senior vice president for global engineering and technology Patrick Ryan. “We are working with SHI to develop practical applications for the technology with a focus on safer operations.”
SHI vice president for the ship and offshore performance research centre, Hyun Joe Kim said collaborating with a class society was essential for this project.
“Through this joint development with ABS, we expect to provide the enhanced hull structural health monitoring and prediction package in the SVessel Smart Platform,” he said.
“This will be the one of the most beneficial solutions to our clients among the solutions provided in our SVessel platform in terms of safer operation and management.”
