Must read

The Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Santano, has visited the port of Barcelona, the third port in the state-owned port system in terms of cargo volume, to learn about the development plans for this strategic infrastructure. During the visit, the Secretary of State was accompanied by the President of Puertos del Estado, Gustavo Santana, and the President of the Port Authority, José Alberto Carbonell. Thus, both were able to convey to him that the port of Barcelona is undergoing a complete transformation to boost its decarbonization and improve its operations and accessibility, as well as to become a more sustainable, accessible, digitized, and integrated port with a horizon set on 2030.

An investment of 215 million euros is planned for 2026 and more than 1.1 billion euros between 2026 and 2029, as outlined in the Business Plan agreed upon by Puertos del Estado and the Port Authority of Barcelona. These investments will fund essential works to improve the port’s competitiveness, such as new railway access points that will boost its connectivity and capacity expansions, including the expansion of the Adosado wharf fourth phase, the initial steps for the Catalunya Wharf, or the construction of new berths at the Energy Wharf.

Furthermore, measures that fall within the commitment to sustainability will be funded, specifically the development of the OPS system to supply electricity to docked ships, allowing them to turn off their auxiliary engines, reducing noise and emissions. During his tour of the port of Barcelona, the Secretary of State visited the APM Terminals container terminal, where a modernization plan is being implemented, with an investment amounting to 156 million euros, which will allow the company to strengthen its strategic position in the Mediterranean, operate two megaships simultaneously, and advance the decarbonization of the industry.
