Seafarer Happiness recovers from nadir last quarter

Must read

The latest Seafarers Happiness Index report, just published by The Mission to Seafarers, has indicated that seafarer happiness levels were recovering from the low that they reached in Q1 2022. Overall happiness increased from 5.85 to 7.21 out of 10 in Q2, with levels rising across all categories.

The survey, undertaken with the support of the Standard P&I Club and Wales-based international ship inspection specialist Idwal, found that a range of industry solutions to tackle seafarer wellbeing had finally begun to lift morale and mindsets onboard. With more vaccinations, more frequent crew changes, wage rises and new amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), there had been a knock-on effect for seafarer optimism, the survey found.

Additionally, Covid-19 restrictions had now eased across the globe. “This freedom of movement has had a hugely beneficial effect on seafarer happiness and as vaccination levels also rise among crews, there is a sense of stability returning to the industry,” said The Mission to Seafarers.

Seafarers last quarter were happier with their shore leave and with welfare facilities when they were ashore. With Covid restrictions easing, more Seafarer Centres were open and were able to support seafarers with the provisions they need when ashore. The biggest contributing factor to an improvement of mood among seafarers had been knowing when they were going home. The data from Q2 reflected that the industry was getting better at making crew changes more regularly, with 41% of seafarers onboard for between just one and three months.

Changes to the MLC regarding connectivity had been met with cautious optimism by seafarers, who welcomed the prospect of improved communication, but were wary of the potential cost and quality of service.

The survey showed that efforts had been made to improve seafarers’ quality of life while on board, and that this focus was paying off.
