Against the backdrop of frequent extreme weather events globally, all employees of the Shanghai Port have remained at their posts, utilizing scientific scheduling to overcome adverse effects such as persistent high temperatures and typhoons. In August, the container throughput exceeded 5.02 million TEUs for the first time, setting a new historical record. This further consolidates Shanghai’s position as an international shipping center and provides solid support for ensuring the stability of the global supply chain.
In August of this year, Shanghai experienced historic high temperatures, with 27 high-temperature days setting a record for the same period. Compounded by the impact of Typhoon “Chujiecao” (Koguma), port operations faced severe challenges. SIPG (Shanghai International Port Group) implemented unified deployment and precise strategies. By optimizing operational procedures, strengthening the application of intelligent systems, and rationally allocating resources, it fully ensured the safe and efficient operation of the port. Each terminal company reasonably arranged working hours, strictly implemented heatstroke prevention, cooling, flood control, and typhoon prevention measures to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
During this period, SIPG launched a special立功竞赛 (merit competition) titled “Combat Typhoons, Seize Sailing Schedules, and Strive for ‘Two Weeks’”. Terminals, pilotage and tug services, tallying, logistics, and others actively responded to the call, meticulously planning and formulating competition plans, and implementing lead coordination. Through mobilization meetings, setting up leaderboards, organizing team studies, and other methods, they extensively mobilized and built consensus, allowing an atmosphere of “everyone participates and strives for excellence” to permeate every corner. Management personnel at all levels took the initiative to lead shifts and be on duty. The Party, Worker, and Youth League突击队 (shock teams) played a vanguard and exemplary role, leading employees in continuous efforts to tackle key problems, strengthening internal and external coordination, and overall联动 (joint operations). They integrated the responsibility of “bearing the burden on their shoulders and grasping the tasks in their hands” into every operational环节 (link), injecting inexhaustible momentum into efficient production. In August, the Hudong Company achieved a new monthly high in production performance, completing a container throughput of 470,017.25 TEUs. On August 13th, the Yangshan Phase IV automated terminal achieved a daily (day and night) container throughput of 28,536 TEUs, setting a new historical record, with single-shift operations exceeding 10,000 TEUs for the first time. On August 11th, the Luodong Company’s daily throughput was recorded at 6,514 TEUs,刷新 (breaking) the record of first exceeding 6,000 TEUs on August 1st and the record of 6,086 TEUs set on August 8th. Simultaneously, both shift volume and single-hour volume per shift set new records. On August 11th, the Pudong Company’s daily throughput exceeded 10,000 TEUs, setting a new high for the second half of the year.
Furthermore, Shanghai Port fully leveraged the overall advantages of being a母港 (home port), deepened strategic cooperation with key shipping companies, utilized the synergistic effects of logistics area resources, increased efforts in business innovation and market development, and optimized the business coordination between the collection and distribution center and the Yangshan port area. All container units strengthened dynamic tracking and communication coordination for key routes like the “Twin Stars”, ensured production services for container ships, optimized production organization, enhanced lean production management, and effectively utilized operational techniques such as double-berthing, triple-berthing, dual-hoist dual-spreader operations, and simultaneous loading and unloading. They implemented保障措施 (safeguard measures) like direct berthing for ships and hot transfer of international transshipment containers to improve terminal resource utilization. They ensured the operational service of the domestic trade “Three Ports One Route” premium route and promoted port-shipping collaboration. They strengthened the construction of smart office common capabilities, achieved data interconnection across various business segments, and expanded the application of big data to serve production and management. On the night shift of August 9th, the Mingdong Company’s Operation Team Four encountered an emergency with the “UAE Asante” – the ship’s schedule was advanced by 10 hours, leaving only 7 hours before departure with 985 natural boxes still to be handled. Management deployed three key operational lines and ultimately completed the ship 30 minutes early with a ship-hour rate of 143 natural /hour,抢出 (seizing) a critical window for subsequent production. On August 10th, the extra-loader ship “New Los Angeles”, carrying 3,805 natural boxes, berthed at the Hudong terminal. With tight time and heavy tasks, the company maximally activated ten operational lines for simultaneous work,最终 (finally) completing the ship within two tide cycles, ensuring zero delay in the ship’s schedule.
Facing severe tests such as high temperatures and heavy rain, the concentrated arrival of trunk and feeder vessels, and mechanical equipment operating under continuous high-intensity conditions, all units of Shanghai Port implemented typhoon prevention, flood control, heatstroke prevention, and cooling measures. They increased the frequency of inspections and checks, dynamically adjusted staff attendance, and conducted safety training and emergency drills. Engineering and technical departments strengthened equipment support, completing preventive maintenance on key machinery and production management systems ahead of schedule. The Party, Worker, and Youth League突击队 (shock teams) were on standby at all times to respond to sudden breakdowns and organize on-site emergency repairs, ensuring production was unaffected. Support departments conveyed care through practical actions, delivering cool drinks and heatstroke prevention items to frontline employees. On the night of August 2nd, the “Jinyu Tai’an” docked at the Yidong Branch Company experienced container damage due to some containers shifting inside the hold from typhoon turbulence. The Party, Worker, and Youth League突击队 (shock team) worked through the night to finalize a strategy of “wire rope slinging + container reinforcement”. Quay crane operators precisely controlled the spreaders, and on-site managers supervised and directed the entire process. After several hours of effort, the 8 damaged containers were safely lifted out of the hold, resolving the danger. In August, the engineering department突击队 (shock team) of the Shengdong Company completed 140 preventive maintenance tasks and 611 emergency repair tasks, with equipment availability rate exceeding 98%. The Guandong Company made its own cooling and summer-relief drinks to send to the site, adding refreshing side dishes and fresh fruit to delivery packages to help employees maintain healthy physical and mental states. The Zhendong Branch Company trained frontline employees on safety matters for working in high temperatures and purchased portable fans to ensure uninterrupted cooling.
