The port of Piraeus occupies the 13th position among the top 40 ports of the European Union, in terms of the busiest short-sea shipping ports in the EU, according to the latest data from Eurostat.
In 2023, the total weight of goods transported to/from the main EU ports via short-sea shipping was 1.6 billion tonnes. This number translates to a decrease of 5.4% compared to 2022.
The port of Rotterdam was by far the busiest port in the EU, in terms of goods transported, with 159 million tonnes, corresponding to 9.9% of the EU total. The second busiest port was that of Antwerp (119 million tonnes), while in third place on the “podium” is Gdańsk in Poland, with 61 million tonnes of goods.
