Headquartered in Singapore, Maritime Ethanol & Methanol Alliance brings together shipowners, fuel producers, engine manufacturers, regulators, ports, and class societies under one umbrella.
Singapore-based Global Centre for Green Fuels (GCGF) on Monday (13 October) announced the launch of the Maritime Ethanol & Methanol Alliance (MEMA), a new global platform uniting ethanol and methanol stakeholders to advance the deployment of low-carbon marine fuels through coordinated policy dialogue, fuel standardisation, and technical collaboration.
Headquartered in Singapore, MEMA brings together shipowners, fuel producers, engine manufacturers, regulators, ports, and class societies under one umbrella. MEMA aims to foster a shared framework for safe handling, fuel specification alignment, and life-cycle carbon reduction across the maritime value chain.
“Decarbonising shipping demands a portfolio of practical, scalable solutions,” said Clarence Woo, Managing Director of GCGF.
“Ethanol and methanol are among the few liquid fuels that can leverage existing infrastructure while delivering measurable reductions in carbon intensity. MEMA’s role is to provide the structure, standards, and collective voice to accelerate that transition globally.”
Through GCGF’s participation in ISO working groups and alignment with IMO and EU regulatory pathways, MEMA aims to help harmonise standards, validate new engine technologies, and enable cost-efficient rollout of low-carbon fuels across ports and fleets.
“MEMA will bridge the technical and policy communities to ensure readiness, from engine trials and fuel quality protocols to crew training and bunkering practices,” said Chris Chatterton, Maritime Advisor to GCGF. “Our goal is to help the sector move from isolated pilots to coordinated, scalable deployment.”
MEMA welcomes participation from all stakeholders committed to a cleaner and more resilient maritime future, including fuel producers, traders, shipowners, port operators, regulators, and OEMs.
