Spain’s Duro Felguera plans venture into foundation fabrication

Spanish multinational Duro Felguera has applied for a concession at Port of Gijón for an ambitious plan to develop a fabrication facility for foundations for the offshore wind market

The energy, oil and gas and mining company wants to use land at Port of Gijón to fabricate foundations for the fixed-bottom and floating wind markets.

The company says it wants to a wants to position itself in the fast-growing sector, which it describes as undergoing ‘exponential growth’ in the coming years.

The company’s plan has two phases. The first, with facilities for foundation fabrication and storage, would require 120,000 m2 of land and would require an investment of €66M.

The second, which provides for the expansion of the facilities with an XXL monopile manufacturing line, would be developed on new land and will take the overall level of investment to €115M.

The whole project will require a total of 380,000 m2 of land in the Spanish port.

The foundation fabrication facility could also have a significant impact on employment in the region.

Duro Felguera says it expects to employ up to 800 people directly, along with large numbers of other, indirect jobs.
