MAN Energy Solutions has signed a co-operation agreement with STX Heavy Industries to deliver its three EEXI offerings to MAN B&W-branded low-speed engines manufactured by STX

IMO’s MEPC 335(76) regulation comes into force January 2023 and mandates that vessels currently in service become Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) compliant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

To help shipowners meets the need for a simple, economical system that allows vessels to comply with the regulation, MAN developed the overrideable power limitation (OPL), a device that limits the main engine’s maximum continuous rating with the possibility to override it if the safety of the vessel is compromised.

This is a mechanical stopper device for limiting the fuel index. It is installed on the original fuel index stop and can be adjusted when full engine power is required.

Under the agreement, STX will resell MAN’s EEXI-compliance devices for all STX-manufactured, MAN B&W-branded ME and MC engines. To accommodate customers as quickly as possible, STX will install the OPL on all such units.

The agreement takes immediate effect and will run for an initial period of three years.

Depending on customers’ requirements, the services provided in the agreement offer a complete package with an assessment report, or a standalone OPL.

MAN vice president, head of solutions and site manager Thomas Leander said, “I am happy we have reached an agreement with STX Heavy Industries that will help customers become EEXI-compliant. This also means a lot to us given our commitment to helping customers meet market demands regarding decarbonisation.”

STX senior vice president and head of engine components and retrofit service division Chun-Dong Kim, added “We are very pleased to take this opportunity to reach an agreement with MAN Energy Solutions, who will provide the relevant solution for EEXI regulation while STX will provide a reliable solution for decarbonisation to customers.”
