Svitzer grows Egyptian tugboat fleet with new vessel

Must read

Svitzer has increased the size of its tugboat fleet operating in Egypt with delivery of a new escort vessel from a Turkish builder

Med Marine delivered Svitzer Port Said 3, the first of two newbuildings it is constructing at the Eregli Shipyard, on 22 April. This is the first MED-A2885 class vessel and was built to Robert Allan Ltd’s RAstar 2800 design.

It is classed as an escort tugboat with fire-fighting capabilities and has a bollard pull of 75 tonnes.

A second tug is being built at the Eregli Shipyard to the same design and class, with delivery expected by the end of May 2022.

It gained the contract to build both tugs for the Maersk Group subsidiary in February 2022.

With the delivery of both escort tugs, Svitzer will operate six vessels in Egypt. It operates four tugboats in the Suez Strait region, which includes Port Said and Port Suez.

These two new tugs have an overall length of 28 m, moulded beam of 13 m, hull depth of 5 m, draught of 4 m and a speed of 12 knots.

“We are delighted to deliver this vessel to Svitzer, a very valuable business partner of ours,” said Med Marine sales manager Melis Üçüncü. “We look forward to many more projects with them in the future.”
