Tackling tanker decarbonisation on the menu at Donsø Shipping Meet

Must read

The pathway to decarbonisation was a major theme in the introduction speeches at the first day of the Donsø Shipping Meet on the Swedish island famous for its tanker companies

Ballast water treatment system and cargo pump provider DESMI is the main sponsor of the 2022 Donsø Shipping Meet and it was appropriate its chief executive Rasmus Folsø gave the keynote speech.

Mr Folsø said the Donsø Shipping Meet is about community, and this remarkably beautiful island is the home to several prominent shortsea and deepsea tanker owners and operators.

So far, DESMI has supplied and retrofit installed ballast water treatment systems on 29 vessels belonging to Donsø owners.

Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping chief executive Bo Cerup-Simonsen gave a presentation on the progress towards decarbonisation.

The Center has undertaken analysis on the plans and results of progress towards net-zero emissions. Mr Cerup-Simonsen reported just over one-third (35%) of the large container and bulk companies show net-zero ambitions.

Container companies have the most ambitions, with six of the 30 companies assessed as having net-zero ambitions, followed by the bulk carrier sector (five from 30 companies) and three tanker companies from 30 assessed.

This was, he said, a good start and showed there are early movers in the industry and “shipping is part of the solution.”
