Chennai port has set up a committee under its deputy chairperson to study how the tariffs could be decided at the port level as per the decision of the Major port authorities act passed b y the parliament last year, Port Chairperson Sunil Paliwal told a news conference.
The committee in which the EXIM trade will be fully associated is expected to submit its report within six months, he said.
The major ports had suffered a serious disadvantage against Private port in terms of tariffs. While the private ports could revise tariffs based on the market conditions, the government owned major ports had to look up to Tariff Authority for Major Ports (TAMP) the statutory
authority set by the government for any decision on tariffs.
Major ports have been empowered to decide their own tariffs
