The President of the USA, Donald Trump, has caused a multitude of realignments with his governing style. Among other things, it is recalled that he has committed to eliminating the offshore wind industry, that is, the production of electrical energy through offshore wind parks.
As a Reuters publication reports, the repercussions of this policy are irreparably hitting both American shipyards and port operating authorities. The American President calls offshore wind energy “inefficient technology that harms whales and birds”. At the same time, however, he is a major supporter of the revival of the domestic shipbuilding industry, which he considers vital for US dominance in global trade and security.
The impact represents an unintended consequence of Trump’s policy for the industry in question, which included work stoppages and permit revisions for massive projects that had been encouraged by the green investment policy of former President Joe Biden.
Specifically, the repercussions, according to a Reuters investigation, include a canceled funding of over $679 million from the Department of Transportation for ports supporting offshore wind energy. In addition, orders for new-build offshore vessels have been virtually eliminated.
Finally, Maersk canceled this month a $475 million contract for a vessel that had been specifically designed to install massive wind turbines for the Empire Wind project off the coast of New York.
