The Court of Cassation overturned the dismissal of Stefano Puzzer, a port worker from Trieste and leader of the 2021 protests against the Green Pass, by the Alpt, the Port Work Agency led by the Port System Authority of Trieste.
Puzzer, at the time of the events, had chosen not to comply with the obligation to show the green pass upon entering the port, despite being in possession of one. He himself had stated that he had tested positive for Covid. He thus had a long absence from work without any justification and was dismissed.
The Supreme Court ruled that the reasons presented by the Port Authority did not justify the measure taken. The case now returns to the Court of Appeal of Venice, which will have to decide whether or not to order reinstatement. Puzzer, known for his role in the protests that brought Trieste to the center of national attention, had contested the measure from the beginning. With this decision, the Court of Cassation paves the way for a new examination of the case, which could also have consequences in other similar proceedings. Pending the judgment on the merits, the employment status of the former port unionist remains suspended; he described the ruling as a recognition of his reasons and those of everyone who participated in the mobilizations.
