The first hydrogen-powered cruise ship

Must read

A significant milestone in the cruise industry’s decarbonization journey was recently recorded at the shipyards of the Italian Fincantieri.

Specifically, according to a related post on social media, on Tuesday, September 9th, the keel-laying ceremony for Viking’s ultra-modern and innovative cruise ship “Viking Libra” took place. The ceremony was held at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, in the presence of senior executives from the Italian shipyard and the cruise company.

The “Viking Libra” is the world’s first cruise ship that will utilize hydrogen, which will be stored on board, both for propulsion and for generating electrical power while at sea. It is, therefore, a technological and simultaneously “green” milestone for the two companies and the cruise industry in general.

With a gross tonnage of approximately 53,400 tons and a length of 239 meters, the “Viking Libra” will be able to accommodate 998 cruise passengers. Finally, its technologically advanced hydrogen-based propulsion system will allow the ship to make zero-emission voyages and approach the most environmentally sensitive areas.
