The company diversifies its fleet by ordering its first container ships, following the trend of other dry and tanker operators
Monte Carlo – The Monegasque company Transocean Maritime Agencies has ordered its first container ships, marking its entry into the boxship sector. According to Alphaliner and market sources, the company has signed a contract with the Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding shipyard for two 1,930 teu units, of the “Wenchong Swan 1900” model, with delivery scheduled for 2028. The ships, already under construction, will be named Ajax C and Apollo C.
Led by Ruth McLoughlin, Transocean is known for its activities in the dry bulk and tanker sectors. Founded in the Sixties by Guenther Neunhoeffer, it currently manages around 15 ships with an average age of seven years. Its last entry into the newbuilding market was in 2024, with the order of two ultramax bulk carriers at the New Dayang Shipbuilding shipyard.
The initiative reflects a broader trend that sees traditional dry and tanker owners expanding into the container sector, particularly in the feeder segment between 1,700 and 3,000 teu, attracted by stable freight rates and strong regional demand.
Market sources also link Transocean to a possible further order for two 3,100 teu ships at New Dayang, with delivery also in 2028 and an estimated cost of 45 million dollars per unit. The company has not yet officially commented on the newbuilding program nor confirmed any employment contracts for the future ships.
