Guinea has undeniably emerged as one of the key countries in the commodities sector. It is worth mentioning that, at the moment, it holds the top position regarding bauxite exports and the second in its production, within a “breathing” distance from Australia.
It is recalled that Guinea’s bauxite exports, the raw material for aluminum production, recorded an increase of around 36% and were set at the record level of 99.8 million metric tons during the first half of 2025.
In fact, according to Kpler, in the first half of the year, the African country’s bauxite exports represent 73% of total global seaborne exports. China was the country that absorbed the largest volumes of these bauxite shipments.
However, as a recent Kpler report states, despite the expected increase in absolute terms, Guinea’s dominance may be called into question, with the African country’s share of global exports expected to retreat to around 70%. The bauxite production of “traditional powers” in the sector, such as Australia and Sierra Leone, as well as the emergence of new countries, such as Cameroon and Guyana, may cause realignments in the bauxite market and potentially limit Guinea’s primacy in global bauxite exports.
