Third-gen battery system

Must read

A Swiss energy storage solutions company has developed a third-generation marine battery system for use on fully electric and hybrid vessels.

The Navius MRS-3 by Leclanché is based on the company’s MRS-2 with enhancements including improved battery energy density, modularity and safety.

“Leclanché’s new Navius MRS-3 represents the latest generation in powerful, safe and emission-free electrification systems for the maritime industry,” said Anil Srivastava, chief executive at Leclanché.

“We’ve poured everything we’ve learned from our award-winning MRS-2 system into this project, setting a new performance standard for marine vessels including its liquid-cooling architecture which is now universally recognised as the safest in the industry.”

Unveiled at the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo 2022 in Amsterdam, the system will begin shipping in 2023 and has already been specified in several design wins including Scandlines’ 10MWh PR24 zero-emission freight ferry.

Enhancements

The M3 battery modules hold cycle-life 65 Ah G/NMC cells giving voltages of up to 1,200 VDC with up to 720 A string continuous discharge current. The number of cells per module has been increased to 36 from 32 giving 8.7kWh of energy, a 13% increase over those fitted in the MRS-2.

Safety features include laminated ceramic separators between cells, enclosures to protect against contaminants and water ingress, a battery management system, liquid cooling and an automated active safety system.

Available in seven different heights the design has been revised to include easily accessible cooling racks, cables and control panel and its more compact design is said to provide 27% more energy in a comparable footprint than earlier generations.

Leclanché has also enhanced its support options with a round-the-clock helpline and remote services, maintenance training and data monitoring. The company is also offering spare parts kits to enable rapid on-site repairs.
