Tokyo – Three LNG carriers from the Japanese shipping company Mitsui Osk Lines (Mol) have been removed from the European Union’s list of sanctioned vessels for allegedly transporting gas produced in Russia.
The LNG carriers Mol North Moon, North Ocean, and North Light were deleted from the blacklist after the EU received written guarantees that the vessels would not be used to transport gas from the Russian projects Arctic LNG 2 and Yamal LNG. Documents published by the European Commission confirmed the removal of the three Mol vessels after the EU received “strong and verifiable commitments” that they would no longer be used to transport Russian gas. The ships had been included in the 17th sanctions package announced in May of this year, following concerns about their potential use for transporting gas within the supply chain managed by the Russian company Novatek.
The latter has repeatedly opposed its inclusion in the sanctions lists of the United States and the European Union and denied its alleged involvement with the so-called “shadow fleet” that illicitly transports gas produced in Russia.
