Berg Propulsion has secured a breakthrough order for propulsion and control systems in Turkey, for a harbour tug under construction at Icdas Shipyard

Icdas is building a harbour tug for its own fleet to support drydock operations and activities in the surrounding port area of Çanakkale, north-west Turkey.
This 20-m tug will be built to Robert Allan Ltd’s RAscal 2000 design, with a pair of Caterpillar-manufactured Cat C32 main diesel engines each developing 1,081 kW of power at 2,000 rpm driving twin Berg MTA 318 azimuth thrusters with fixed-pitch propellers. Berg Propulsion Eurasia will also supply the shaft and control systems.
“We needed to achieve 35 tonnes of bollard pull, which is high for a harbour tug of this size,” says Berg Propulsion Eurasia general manager Mustafa Muslum.
“We could do this competitively because our set up can handle 8% higher input power than comparable systems.”
This deal represents the first tug propulsion order from Icdas and in Turkey’s significant tug market, although Berg Propulsion supplied four MPP controllable-pitch propellers to the same shipbuilder for cargo ships between 2012 and 2015.
Icdas Shipyard shipbuilding sales representative Kayhan Bilekdemir says the propulsion systems for this harbour tug are scheduled for delivery September 2023.
“Berg equipment is robust and reliable, while the company is highly collaborative on supply and installation,” he says.
Berg Propulsion Eurasia will also provide after-sales support in Istanbul, Turkey after it set up infrastructure in the country to manage sales, commissioning and lifecycle services. Mr Muslum says this is part of Berg Propulsion’s strategy to enable regional hubs to support local supply and service needs.
Berg Propulsion provides integrated propulsion systems, including hybrid diesel-electric, thrusters, electrical drives and gear interfaces.
