Top 3 carriers hold positions in 2022 in Georgia on Black Sea

THE top three carriers (MSC, Maersk, Cosco) held their 2021 positions in Q1 2022 cumulatively providing 79 per cent of the total container turnover of Georgia.

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Maersk lines decreased their container turnover in Q1 2022, while MSC carrier is the only liner service provider in the Port of Batumi. Maersk still the big customer of the Black Sea Poti port

Jointly, 2M Alliance lines represent 63 per cent of Georgia container turnover in Q1 2022.

Notable results were demonstrated by Cosco Shipping carrier which doubled its volume in Q1 2022 gaining, resulting in 16.1 per cent of the total container turnover of Georgia.

Zim reduced its activities in the Port of Poti to 1.69 per cent transporting twice less volume compared with the Q1 2021 period.

At the same time, Turkon shipping line reduced its volume in Q1 2022 stepping down from the fourth place in the Q1 2021 to 11th in the 2022 Q1 period representing fewer than one per cent of container volume in Georgia.

While Georgian domestic container turnover increased in Q1 2022 vs Q1 2021, the transshipment volume through the container terminals of Batumi and Poti is expected to grow.
