Tow Pilot’s Misjudgment Results in $3.28 Million Bridge Collision on the Mississippi River

Must read

A recent publication by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reveals that a seasoned tow pilot’s misjudgment regarding river conditions led to a significant mishap on the Mississippi River. This incident took place on May 9, 2024, when the towing vessel Joe B. Wyatt collided with the protective structures of the Fort Madison Bridge in Iowa while pushing a fleet of barges downstream.

The NTSB report indicates that the pilot, despite his extensive experience navigating this area, strayed over 200 feet from his intended course due to an expectation of strong cross-currents from Dutchman Island. He believed these currents would push him toward the left bank; however, they never materialized as anticipated. When he realized that he was not being affected by these currents as expected and was only about 1,900 feet away from the bridge, it was too late to correct course effectively.Despite efforts to regain control by increasing engine power, one of his barges struck a protection cell at one of the bridge’s pylons.

This collision caused chaos as 13 out of 15 barges broke free and drifted downriver with two crew members still aboard while two others became stuck between protective structures and the tugboat itself. Fortunately, there were no injuries or environmental damage reported; however, damages were estimated at around $3.28 million for both vessels and infrastructure involved.

The NTSB emphasized how crucial it is for pilots to adhere to established sailing lines—designated safe routes based on factors like channel depth and current patterns—to avoid such accidents in future operations. The Joe B. Wyatt is owned by Ingram Barge Company LLC and has been in service since 1982; it measures 158 feet long with an overall tow length reaching over 1,150 feet.

Ultimately, investigators concluded that this incident stemmed from an overreaction by the pilot concerning expected river conditions during their approach towards Fort Madison Bridge—a reminder for all mariners about maintaining vigilance even when experienced in familiar waters.
