Tug building projects in the Philippines and China

Must read

Multiple tugs are being constructed in the Philippines and China as demand increases in the region

In Pangasinan, the Philippines, Josefa Slipways Inc (JSI) has laid the keel for two tugboats it is building for the nation’s naval forces to Robert Allan Ltd designs.

One is a 30-m oceangoing tug that will have a bollard pull of 60 tonnes, built to a RAmparts 3000W design, and the second, JSI hull 044 will be a harbour tug with 40 tonnes of bollard pull, an overall length of 28 m, built to a RAmparts 2700W design.

The Philippines Navy requires new tugs to support larger naval vessels in ports in the country as it invests in its marine security.

In China, Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard has started several new tug newbuildings over the past three weeks in response to rising demand for handling larger ships in domestic ports.

Its latest milestone was laying the keel for a 4,420-kW powered azimuth stern drive (ASD) tug it is building for Nantong Yangkou Port Tugboat.

In June, Zhenjiang Shipyard in Jiangsu province cut steel on an ASD tugboat with fire-fighting capabilities for Taicang Port and laid the keel for two 5,000-kW ASD tugs for Quanzhou Shipping.

Two tugboats for different owners were completed and delivered at the end of June.

Shanghai Hailong Shipping Service received Hailong Tuo 3 from the shipyard, 26 June. This vessel has an overall length of 37 m, beam of 10 m and depth of around 5 m. Its propulsion power of 2,942 kW generates a speed of 13 knots, forward bollard pull of 51 tonnes and backward towing force of 46 tonnes.

Zhenjiang Shipyard delivered a 3,676-kW ASD tugboat with fire-fighting systems to an unnamed domestic shipowner. This 40-m vessel has a speed of almost 14 knots, an ahead pull of 62 tonnes and astern pull of 57 tonnes.

Several tugboats were launched at the shipyard during the final weeks of June. This included Baohang 17 and Baohang 10, which were designed and built by Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard for Liaoning Longyun Shunze Tugboat Co.

On 19 June, Beibuwan Port witnessed the launch of two 5,120-kW ASD tugboats, Xin Beibuwan Gang 21 and Xin Beibuwan Gang 22, which are part of a large newbuilding campaign at the shipyard.
