Two deaths reported in Quark Expeditions Zodiac incident in Antarctica

World Explorer is regularly chartered by polar expert Quark Expeditions
Two passengers aboard Quark Expeditions’ World Explorer reportedly died after a ship’s Zodiac overturned in the Antarctic earlier this week.

According to Pax News, the Zodiac flippedduring an excursion near Elephant Island on Nov. 15. The four other passengers and two crew aboard the Zodiac were recovering under medical care onboard as the ship headed to Ushuaia, Pax News reported, citing a statement by Quark.

Caused by a breaking wave?

The polar adventure company said winds were light and the sea was smooth but ‘indications are the accident was caused by a breaking wave.’

Seatrade Cruise News reached out to Quark Friday night but did not immediately hear back by early Saturday.

Quark regularly charters World Explorer which, according to AIS data, had reached Ushuaia on Friday.

The 2019-built, 1B ice-class vessel has capacity for up to 172 passengers.

Quark is a seasoned expedition cruise operator with three decades of polar experience.
