US shipyards close to completing tugboats

Washburn & Doughty Associates is close to completing a new tug for Moran Towing after launching Dennis Moran Q2 2022

 

This harbour tug is being commissioned at East Boothbay in Maine with two Caterpillar-manufactured Cat 3512E engines, developing 1,900 kW of power and complying with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 emissions standards.

Washburn & Doughty has also made progress on two tugboats it is building for McAllister Towing, with the first of these, Jane McAllister, set to be delivered November 2022. A second tug, Grace McAllister, is scheduled to be completed Q1 2023.

These tractor tugs will have a bollard pull of 85 tonnes coming from two Cat 3516E main engines and Schottel SRP 490 Z-drive units.

Master Boat Builders is close to completing tugs for both Bay Houston Towing and Suderman & Young at its shipyard in Coden, Alabama.

It is building three tugs to Robert Allan Ltd designs each for the Houston, Texas-headquartered owners and a spokesman for the shipyard said the first of these tugs will be completed soon.

Both Bay Houston Towing and Suderman & Young ordered new harbour tugs July 2022 from Master Boat Builders to bolster their fleets operating in US Gulf coastal ports.

Florida Marine Transporters (FMT) Shipyard delivered a new towboat to Maritime Partners Q2 2022. Rodney Hagebols is operating in the Lower Mississippi River out of New Orleans.

Blount Boats Inc delivered Eddie Somers, a buoy tender and icebreaker, to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. This 29-m vessel was built to naval architecture by BMT Designers & Planners and has started operating around Crisfield Harbor and Smith Island. Its main propulsion includes two Cummins QSK19 diesel engines, meeting EPA Tier 3 and producing 560 kW of power at 1,800 rpm. These turn Michigan Wheel propellers through Twin Disc MGX-5202SC marine gears with 2.48:1 reduction ratios.

Lakes Pilots Association has taken delivery of a new Resilient-class pilot vessel from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding. This all-aluminium launch, Huron Pride, has twin Cummins QSL-9 diesel engines each rated at 340 kW, at 2,100 rpm, turning a pair of HamiltonJet HJ-322 waterjets through Twin Disc 5082SC gears.

Huron Pride was built to naval architecture by Ray Hunt Design for use in Port Huron, Michigan, with a top speed of 37 knots.
