The American military, on orders from President Donald Trump, has attacked another suspected Venezuelan drug boat, killing three people on board. The boat was attacked in international waters.
The information about the attack was published on the president’s own social media platform Truth Social, and presents no evidence that there were drugs on board the boat, how the boat was attacked, who carried out the attack, or if there were survivors.
The attack comes just under 14 days after the American military, also on the president’s orders, attacked and blew up another suspected Venezuelan drug boat, killing 11 people.
Legal experts have questioned the legality of this type of attack, as they may be a violation of international law.
The U.S. government rejects this, claiming that drugs pose a threat to U.S. national security. The U.S. designates the suspected drug traffickers as terrorists and claims the drug traffickers are supported by the Venezuelan regime.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro rejects the U.S. accusations and describes the attacks as aggressions directed at Venezuela.
“We will exercise our legitimate right to defend ourselves,” says Nicolás Maduro, without specifically referring to how that will happen.
