The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued its 48th ballast water management system (BWMS) type-approval certificate to Atlantium Technologies
The USCG awarded its type-approval certificate in late April to the Norway-based BWMS manufacturer following a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type-approval application.
The review determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.
The treatment principle of the Purestream BWMS is based on filtration and UV treatment at intake and UV treatment at discharge. This approval covers seven models with maximum treatment rated capacities of between 150-1,500 m3 per hour in volume.
A complete list of BWMSs that have been approved or have type-approval applications currently under review can be found on the Marine Safety Center web page. Redacted copies of all completed type-approval certificates are also available.
Prior to 2021’s meeting of IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee, the Norwegian Maritime Authority notified IMO of its decision to type-approve the Purestream BWMS manufactured by Atlantium Technologies Ltd. The Atlantium Purestream BWMS utilises filtration and ultraviolet light treatment with no active substances to treat the ballast water. (MEPC 77/INF.13) IMO approval of the system has been pushed to MEPC 78, currently set for June 2022.
