General cargo ship Sea Eagle (IMO 8410380) lost stability during offloading operation at Iskenderun Port, Turkey, overnight September 17th/18th, while loaded with containers. The ship was using a port lift truck to unload containers when it suddenly keeled over to port.
Turkey’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure confirmed that 24 containers were lost from the Togo-flagged Sea Eagle. A minor oil leak was detected and boomed off. All crew members were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
The ship had arrived in Iskenderun from the Mersin, Turkey earlier in the day.
An operation to offload the ship’s fuel and retrieve containers was taking place Monday. The ship appeared eventually to have sunk at the berth.
The ship, according to photos and video, rested starboard on pier, then listed and capsized portside, resting on bottom stern and portside, partially above the waterline. The wreck was surrounded by booms, with salvage, a clean-up operation and container recovery underway.
1984-built, Togo-flagged, 3,120 gt Sea Eagle is owned by IBN Battuta Maritime Ltd care of manager Sea Scanner Logistics For Shipping of Damietta, Egypt. As of September 17th the vessel was at port in Iskenderun.
