VTOL Cargo Drone Flies Full Terminal-to- Mainland Route Over Singaporean Waters in Demonstration of How Dangerous-Goods Sample Logistics Can Be Flown Safely

A Drone Logistics Company (ADLC) today flew the complete terminal-to-mainland cargo drone mission profile over Singaporean waters, connecting a marine terminal on Pulau Sebarok with the Maritime Drone Estate (MDE) on the mainland, in a demonstration designed to show how petroleum cargo samples classified as dangerous goods can be moved safely and routinely by air in one of the world’s most dense ports.
The aircraft flew the full operational route in both directions, exactly as it would on a commercial mission, carrying representative dummy sample payloads. ADLC holds a Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) Unmanned Aircraft Operator Permit covering both beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations and the carriage of dangerous goods, the first and only such permit issued in Singapore and, to ADLC’s knowledge, in Asia. For this particular route and this particular demonstration, dangerous goods were not carried.

That is deliberate. Singapore is not a quiet place to run a first. It is the world’s largest bunkering port, one of the densest airspaces anywhere, and a market where every regulator, terminal operator, surveyor and shipping line that matters is already at the table. Nothing here gets waved through because no one was watching.

“There are easier places in Asia to fly a first demonstration, and quieter airspace to do it in,” said Arthur Baeyens, Managing Director APAC at ADLC. “We chose Singapore because it is the hardest version of this problem. If a sample logistics operation can be trusted here, in the world’s busiest bunkering hub, in front of the people who actually run it, it can be trusted anywhere. That is why we would rather prove it in Singapore than somewhere quieter where not everything has to be perfect.”

Singapore handles in the order of 22,000 to 24,000 petrochemical tanker calls a year.

Every one of those cargo transactions requires third-party sampling. Until a laboratory has analysed the sample and issued its result, the cargo cannot be released and the commercial transaction between vessel and terminal cannot complete. The sample is, in effect, the key that unlocks the trade, and today that key still travels by launch boat and van.

Moving that step into the air changes three things at once: the vessel spends less time waiting at berth, the terminal recovers throughput without buying land, and a diesel launch and road leg are replaced by a battery-powered flight. ADLC estimates the model saves one to three hours per shipment in Singapore conditions, runs two to five times faster than the conventional boat-and-van transfer, and cuts CO2 by up to 80 percent against the road equivalent.

What makes 17 August a milestone is not that a drone flew. Drones have flown in Singapore port airspace since 2019. It is that a commercially proven, permitted operator flew the exact profile of a routine dangerous-goods logistics mission into a specially protected petroleum area, in the presence of the regulators and commercial parties who would have to authorise and use it, and put the remaining questions on the table in public rather than leaving them in a filing cabinet.
