In recent years, there has been increased use of large flexible bags, known as jumbo bags (or Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers – FIBCs), during the maritime transport of bulk dry cargo. These are bags made of woven polypropylene with an inner lining, capable of carrying from 500 to 3,000 kilograms of cargo.
Jumbo bags offer flexibility during loading and cost savings during maritime transport, however, they come with significant risks. In this context, seafarers must be aware of and carefully manage jumbo bags, taking into account the following risks:
