Women in Maritime Tomorrow: Eirini Diamantara on shipping’s diverse opportunities

Must read

Shipping is a gateway to a dynamic global sector filled with diverse opportunities, both onshore and at sea, says Xclusiv Shipbrokers research analyst Eirini Diamantara, encouraging young women to “dive in and explore”

Speaking to Riviera on the occasion of the International Day for Women in Maritime 2025 special report, Ms Diamantara recalls how she seized an “unexpected opportunity” when she began as an intern at a well-established shipping company.

Although her academic background in economics did not initially point her toward a maritime career, everything changed when she was offered the internship. “This opportunity revealed the fascinating connection between global economics and maritime commerce,” she highlights.

Captivated by this, she pursued a Master’s degree in shipping and finance, focusing on indepth data analysis and shipping market dynamics, recognising her analytical strengths and further fuelling her enthusiasm for research.

As a natural progression, Ms Diamantara joined Xclusiv Shipbrokers, where she now specialises in market research and vessel valuation.

A day in the life of an analyst

Her daily routine involves evaluating geopolitical, economic and political developments – such as regional conflicts, trade agreements, economic policy shifts and regulatory changes – and their impact on shipping. She also tracks vessel transactions and monitors pricing trends.

“This responsibility requires staying informed about sale and purchase activities across different vessel types and sizes, understanding pricing trends, and recognising how these transactions reflect broader market sentiment,” Ms Diamantara explains.

Additionally, she conducts vessel valuations, assessing ships based on factors such as age, technical specifications, cargo capacity, maintenance history, classification status and market conditions.

Her insights contribute to Xclusiv Shipbrokers’ weekly, monthly and ad hoc reports.

Support and guidance in shipping

Succeeding in a male-dominated industry is no small feat, yet Ms Diamantara notes she has not faced major hurdles in her career. The Covid-19 era, which coincided with her Master’s graduation and job search, was challenging but felt more like a universal setback than a personal roadblock.

“I’m more inclined to think the most significant challenges we confront are often self-generated, regardless of age or gender,” she reflects.

Growing up in a shipping-oriented family – with her father and sister actively involved in the industry – helped her adapt and ignited her passion. Throughout her career, she has benefited from the guidance and encouragement of colleagues and superiors, “fostering a culture of continuous learning and self-improvement”.

Navigating a transforming maritime landscape

Discussing the challenges facing the maritime industry, Ms Diamantara notes the sector is undergoing a “turbulent transformation, marked by market volatility, shifting trade patterns and evolving environmental regulations.”

From a shipbroker’s perspective, the industry’s transition to alternative fuels and energy-efficient vessel designs requires going beyond traditional brokerage to provide comprehensive strategic guidance.

“Tightened capital availability and increased ESG scrutiny from financial institutions demand that brokers identify sustainable investment opportunities and maintain transparent relationships with financiers,” she explains.

Moreover, geopolitical fragmentation and protectionist policies add complexity, necessitating robust risk assessment and alternative sourcing strategies.

The industry is also undergoing a digital transformation driven by data, automation and AI, making continuous technological investment and talent development essential.

Amid these changes, Ms Diamantara emphasises Xclusiv Shipbrokers views challenges as opportunities to strengthen client relationships and add value. Adaptability, informed expertise, and strong connections are key to navigating this evolving maritime landscape, she says.

Advice for young women entering maritime

When asked what advice she would give to young women considering a career in the maritime industry, Ms Diamantara strongly recommends gaining hands-on experience through internships or shadowing opportunities across different departments.

“Experiencing these roles firsthand will help them make informed decisions and chart the right course for their future,” she notes.

Beyond technical knowledge, she emphasises the importance of personal qualities. “A genuine appetite for learning, a burning passion for their chosen field, a strong work ethic, and exceptional adaptability are crucial,” she concludes.
