China Merchants Energy Shipping is accelerating its modern-fleet optimization with the delivery of the world’s first methanol dual-fuel car carrier.
The 9,300 ceu car carrier, measuring in 219.9 metres long and 37.7 metres wide, is equipped with methanol dual-fuel main and auxiliary engines, boiler and fuel supply system is fully compliant with IMO Tier III emission standards.
By using green methanol, the vessel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70%.
China Merchants Energy Shipping ordered a total of six methanol dual-fuel car carriers at China Merchants Heavy Industry, which are scheduled to take delivery between 2025 and 2026.
“The series of vessels are suitable for a wide range of cargo types. The successive delivery and operation of this series will significantly improve the ship type and age structure of the company’s ro-ro fleet, further enhancing the scale of its international ro-ro fleet and its capability to serve customers,” said China Merchants Energy Shipping.
“Amid the accelerated pace of Chinese automakers expanding overseas and the rapid growth of new energy vehicle exports, this development will solidify the company’s foundation for increasing its carrying capacity and market competitiveness in the niche market. It will also help strengthen the core competitiveness and sustainable profitability of the company’s automotive ro-ro shipping segment,” added the company.
China Merchants Energy Shipping’s car shipping segment currently operates a total of 19 ro-ro vessels, including eight deployed on Yangtze river, four for coastal area and seven ocean-going vessels.
