According to the Xiamen Port Authority, from January to July this year, the container business of Xiamen Port showed steady and positive growth, with a total container throughput of 6.9839 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 1.83%. The development of businesses such as the “Maritime Silk Road” and sea-rail intermodal transport has been continuously accelerating, helping Xiamen Port to continuously expand its cargo source hinterland and constantly enhance its port radiation and competitiveness.
Haitian Terminal’s container handling volume exceeded 1.6 million TEUs, with a growth rate of over 5%.
At the Haitian Terminal of Xiamen Port, reporters saw that 12 container ships, including the Southeast Asia route vessel “CMA CGM BALTIC CLOS” and the “Maritime Silk Road” route vessel “Oriental America,” were simultaneously berthed for operations. The terminal’s 21 quay cranes were operating at full capacity without stopping. Haitian Terminal primarily handles Xiamen Port’s near-sea routes, routes to Taiwan, “Maritime Silk Road” routes, and routes to emerging regions.
From January to July this year, the terminal’s container handling volume exceeded 1.6 million TEUs, with a growth rate of over 5%. Among these, 7 newly added foreign trade routes brought over 15,000 TEUs of handling volume to the terminal. The 50 Southeast Asia routes collectively completed a container handling volume of over 740,000 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of nearly 17%, accounting for 44% of the total volume.
Zhan Wenhai, Duty Manager of Haitian Branch, Xiamen Container Terminal Group Co., Ltd.: We will continue to deepen cooperation with shipping companies such as Maersk and SITC. Plans for the year include adding 3 to 5 direct Southeast Asia routes, focusing on covering emerging markets like Indonesia and East Timor.
Multi-department collaboration makes the “Maritime Silk Road” golden channel “deliver goods” faster.
Behind the continuously rising handling volume is the terminal’s active collaboration with departments such as customs to promote the optimization of customs clearance and operational coordination, improving the ship support system.
The “Maritime Silk Road” is China’s first “Belt and Road” international comprehensive logistics service brand and platform with a shipping theme, featuring specialized routes such as cross-border e-commerce express lines, Indian stone, and Brazilian iron ore. Addressing the core needs of cross-border e-commerce—”small batches, multiple shipments, and strong timeliness”—Haitian Terminal integrated Southeast Asia route resources and launched the “Maritime Silk Road Cross-Border E-commerce Express Channel.” Cross-border goods now take only 2 days to reach the Philippines and 2 to 3 days to reach Vietnam, with efficiency improved by over 20%.
From January to July this year, the container throughput of the “Maritime Silk Road” cross-border e-commerce express line reached 23,900 TEUs. The 61 “Maritime Silk Road” named routes at Xiamen Port completed a container throughput of 1.3386 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 5.93%.
Zhan Wenhai, Duty Manager of Haitian Branch, Xiamen Container Terminal Group Co., Ltd.: We collaborated with customs to implement 17 convenience measures, including “inspect before loading” and “port arrival pre-reporting,” and activated a “48-hour vessel arrival预报 mechanism” to precisely schedule berths and equipment, reducing waiting time. We will also continue to promote the intelligent transformation of the yard and the remote control project for gantry cranes, building a “digital twin terminal” with the goal of reducing equipment idle energy consumption by 20%.
Accelerated development of sea-rail intermodal transport with a year-on-year growth of 24.54%.
In recent years, to further enhance the port’s radiation and competitiveness, Xiamen Port has also actively expanded its cargo source hinterland relying on the sea-rail intermodal transport business, achieving continuous growth in business volume.
From January to July this year, the container sea-rail intermodal transport volume at Xiamen Port reached 89,100 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 24.54%.
Xiamen Ocean Shipping Agency has successfully opened multiple sea-rail intermodal transport channels from Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, and Northern Fujian Province to Xiamen Port, with business volume accounting for about 80% of Xiamen Port’s total. Since the beginning of this year, the company has actively promoted the normalization and规模化 operation of new sea-rail intermodal transport lines such as “Macheng-Xiamen,” creating a stable, efficient, and economical logistics channel to the sea for inland enterprises, truly extending the “port” to the “doorstep” of enterprises.
Zhang Hongke, Deputy Manager of the Sea-Rail Intermodal Transport Division, Xiamen Penavico International Freight Co., Ltd.: The “Macheng-Xiamen” sea-rail intermodal transport business has successfully achieved normalized operation with one dedicated train per week. Each train stably carries over 60 TEUs. Frequency will be gradually increased based on business development needs in the future to further enhance the channel’s capacity and efficiency. Xiamen Penavico will continue to improve the sea-rail intermodal transport network this year, promote the “bulk to container” conversion for businesses like coal and iron ore, and tailor end-to-end personalized sea-rail intermodal transport services.
